Twitter Ban in Nigeria : Here Is Why

Twiter ban in Nigeria is currently effective as Nigerians can no longer use Twitter in Nigeria without VPN. Access to Twitter through Nigeria’s main internet service providers has been blocked. Twitter is still accessible on some wi-fi networks in Nigeria though.

Nigeria indefinitely suspended Twitter yesterday, two days after Twitter removed a post by Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, on June 1, that vowed to punish people destroying government properties in the language they understand.

“Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War,” wrote Buhari, a retired general, referring to the 1967-1970 conflict. “Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

The social media platform said Buhari’s tweet violated its “abusive behavior” policy, removed the post and suspended his account for 12 hours.

Through its Ministry of Information and Culture, the Nigerian government yesterday announced its decision to suspend the operations of social media platform Twitter in the country.

Information Minister Lai Mohammed said the government had acted because of “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

Here’s the statement issued by the ministry and signed off by his media aide Segun Adeyemi :

FG Suspends Twitter’s Operations in Nigeria

The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday,
citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.

How To Bypass The Twitter Ban in Nigeria?

People are already downloading VPNs to bypass the Twitter banned in Nigeria.

A VPN – or Virtual Private Network – connection makes it appear as if the user is accessing the internet from another country, and has been a way to get round similar bans in other countries.
